Political lobbyists may face jail under new Bill

20 Jul

Some news on Lobbying from Thursday’s Daily Telegraph:

Political lobbyists to be forced to reveal clients:

Government lobbyists who refuse to disclose their clients could be taken to court under a new law.  Under plans which could be in force by next year, the lobbyists who refuse to comply could get a criminal record.  They will be required to update their entry every three months.  Those who deliberately leave off clients’ details would face prosecution.  Officials have not yet decided if they should be jailed for severe wrongdoing.

The plans are contained in a Lobbying, Non-Party Campaigning and Trade Union Administration Bill published yesterday.  The rules apply to anyone found to be “personally making communications” on behalf of another person in return for payment.  Public affairs professionals working in-house will be excluded.
