Public Accounts Committee to haul in profligate councils

21 Oct

Council leaders could be called before Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee if they are seen to be wasting money.

Margaret Hodge, the committee’s chairwoman, has announced a “deep dive” investigation into town hall finances.

Up to now the PAC has largely grilled MPs or senior civil servants about Whitehall spending or poor practices. But Mrs Hodge suggested the committee, made up of cross-party MPs, could take over the role of the Audit Commission which will shortly be wound up.

Does a vanity project count?  You bet it will!  The mere fact that it cannot be financed from reserves and will require AT LEAST a £4.8 million loan ought to flag up our council immediately!
